USA’s historie er kort og derfor nærværende, hvorfor det har været endnu mere magtpåliggende at afskaffe historieundervisningen end – indtil for ganske nylig – i Europa. A nation conceived in liberty rimer dårligt med Orwells 1984.
Den star således mere i gæld til det syttende århundredes importerede puritanisme. I Amerika fandt den religiøs tolerance og kunne – som det er typisk for kristendommen – ikke hurtigt nok komme af med den.
Dette bragte den i et modsætningsforhold til the Founding Fathers, hvis God of Nature havde yderst lidt at gøre med Jesus. Noget modstræbende holdt man op med at hænge hekse og piske kvækere og modificerede med tiden sin religiøse fanatisme til en tro på og tillid til en konstitution, der garanterede mere generelle og fundamentale rettigheder som life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness som præciseret i de første amendments.
AMENDMENT I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
AMENDMENT II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
I lang tid var dette børnelærdom, indtil det blev en vederstyggelighed i et totalitært samfund. Der var således ikke oprindelig noget forargeligt ved the pursuit of happiness, den rudimentære American dream.
